The Actor
The Actor is an experimental film based on the diaries of the Jesuit Missionaries from 1610-1791. The Jesuit “way of life” includes “spiritual exercises” that forces one to confine oneself to mimic and enact the life of Christ. The film explores these spiritual exercises (the historical precursor to modern “method acting”) which, relied on an actor’s sense, memory and imagination for training that continued in the theatre of their real-life interactions. This egotistical quest has had devastating ramifications up to this day. The Actor explores the ideas of martyrdom and fanatical religion prevailing our contemporary world and the continued detachment of subject from their surroundings. These missionaries understood themselves only to be subjugating indigenous people of their mission, in the name of God and their own salvation, in their very own one man show. The Actor takes you on a psychedelic journey through these failings.
